Building Information Modelling

Building Information Modelling (BIM) has been described as a step-change in construction, architecture and civil engineering.

BIM is a revolutionary, 3D model-based planning method that utilises data to create a digital representation of the physical and functional characteristics of any kind of built facility. Used by businesses, government agencies and individuals who plan, design, construct, operate and maintain diverse physical infrastructures, BIM saves time and money while improving quality.

With BIM, a facility is built twice; first digitally and then physically. The digital representation acts as a shared knowledge resource, creating a reliable basis for decisions by all stakeholders involved in the building’s lifecycle, from its design and conception right through to its utilisation. Construction of the physical building only starts when the digital representation meets expectations and specifications.
