City Campus Sport and Recreation Centre

A healthy body can help to have a healthy mind.

The Sport and recreation centre at our City Campus is available for you to get fit or just unwind and have fun with your fellow students with a gym, social sports and free fitness classes.

For more serious athletes or people with specific needs (such as nutrition or training requirements), The Zone has state of the art facilities to help you understand your health and fitness, how to improve and get the results you may want to achieve.

Casual/One-off membership

Student/staff: $10 per session

Community: $15 per session


The City campus gym/weights room can be accessed by purchasing a gym membership. This gives you full access to a fully equipped gym including a wide variety of weights machines, free weights and cardio equipment such as treadmills, cross-trainers, rowing machines and spin bikes.

The gym/weights room is available:

  • Monday - Friday: 6am to 9pm
  • Saturday: 8am to 4pm
  • Sunday: 10am - 4pm

Ara City Campus gym will be closed from 23 Dec 3pm – 11 Jan.

Terms & Conditions:

To be eligible for an Ara student or staff gym membership, you must be over the age of 16 years and currently:

  • Studying at Secondary School or a Tertiary Institution

To join or renew your membership, follow the steps below:

  1. Make payment first at student finance and obtain receipt
  2. Complete online gym membership form
  3. Send a photo of your receipt to or alternatively you can come and drop it off to us to have your membership activated immediately. We are located in the Whareora building W block. Please press doorbell by the card scanner for staff assistance.

Gym tour

Gym tours (15 mins only) are available on Monday & Wednesday, between 7.00 am -2.00 pm and Friday 3.00 -7.00 pm.  To book a tour, please email:

Group Fitness Classes

To help increase students physical wellbeing and activity, the City Campus Centre offers a weekly schedule of free group fitness classes.

Social Sports

No Social Sports will be running until further notice.

The Centre provides the opportunity to participate in a variety of sports and recreation activities throughout the year. These include badminton, basketball, volleyball, netball, futsal (indoor football), indoor touch and kīorahi. Students are welcomed to participate in the scheduled events.

In Timaru, students and staff can access discounted memberships at Snap Fitness or Rok Fitness. To redeem either offer, present your Ara ID at your chosen gym. Refer to website for opening hours.
