A great place to learn

At Ara, you won’t just gain the skills required to succeed in the workplace, you’ll also be supported throughout your student journey and enjoy the experience of being a student. Here’s a taste of what you can expect.

A huge range of flexible study options to choose from

With campuses in Christchurch, Timaru, Ashburton and Oamaru, plus more than 150 full-time, part-time, online, blended and distance learning options, we aim to provide as much flexibility as possible to help you fit study around work, family and other commitments.

Being treated as an individual

You’ll never just be a number or a face in a crowd.  You’ll get to know us, and we’ll get to know you and your needs. We’re dedicated to your wellbeing and success and we’re always available if you ever need help or guidance or just a chat.

Expert tutors and inspiring mentors

We’re experts in the subjects we teach and we have years of real-world experience and contacts to share with you. We’re committed to staying up to date with the latest technologies, techniques and practices - many of us continue to work in our chosen fields - and we’re equally committed to inspiring you succeed.

Learning by doing

We’re known for delivering a balance between knowledge and hands-on skills. So instead of sitting in lecture after lecture and writing lots of essays, you’ll spend a lot of your time applying what you learn to practical tasks and projects. It’s called vocational learning and it’s designed to equip you with real skills for real jobs. Studies have shown that vocationally trained people can get ahead in their careers faster than those who study at university.

A supportive whānau

Whether you have academic or personal challenges affecting your study, or you need help with accommodation, transport, childcare, healthcare, disability support or career guidance, we have the staff and services to help. As an Ara student you can access information on these services anywhere, anytime via our student app, MyAra.

Being part of something special

At Ara you’ll enjoy a strong sense of belonging within an inclusive, multicultural environment made up of around 14,000 domestic students and 1800 international students. Our class sizes are generally small so you get to know your classmates and collaborate with them on projects. You’ll get to know students studying other subjects too, through a wide range of events and social activities on campus, plus many student clubs and groups you can join.

Becoming work-ready

We’ll teach you the skills employers want and we’ll give you work placement opportunities that prepare you for the realities of the job. Through these experiences you’ll gain valuable real-world skills and contacts which can be very useful when seeking employment once you graduate.

The ability to really go places

With an internationally-recognised Ara qualification, the world is your oyster. Our graduates can be found working and making a difference across the globe, as well as throughout Aotearoa New Zealand.
