State of local emergency declared – campuses open, stay safe
A strong wind warning – Red has been issued for Christchurch and the Canterbury Plains today, Thursday 23 October, from 9am to 4pm.
The Minister for Emergency Management and Recovery Mark Mitchell has declared a state of local emergency for the Canterbury Region, to assist in the response to the current severe weather.
Severe northwesterly gales are forecast, with damaging gusts of up to 140 km/h in exposed areas.
At this stage, all Ara campuses are open as usual.
“While our campuses remain open, we urge everyone to prioritise their safety,” says Tilly McKay, Director – Corporate Services. “Please spend some time getting prepared, avoid travel if conditions are unsafe and stay indoors or seek sturdy shelter away from trees. We’re monitoring the situation closely and will provide updates on our website if anything changes.”
Bus cancellations
Ara has cancelled all Pearsons bus services to and from the Timaru campus.
