The Fellowship is an honoured class of membership which recognises individuals who have reached the top of the engineering profession and achieved outstanding results.

Robert’s focus on learners and modelling academic leadership were factors in his recognition as a Fellow, as were his demonstration of engagement with the industry and involvement in the engineering sector. Robert is also a member of Engineering New Zealand’s Standards and Accreditation Board and recently retired from the New Zealand Board of Engineering Diplomas.

Robert says he loves celebrating and drawing attention to Ara’s success stories.

"A lot of my time is focused on final year projects and the success of our learners," he says. "I love saying yes to innovation, saying yes to experimentation, and saying yes to staff trying new things."

For Robert, innovation is important in engineering because "What engineers design touches our lives every day in everything we do - from bridges and highways to medical equipment, prosthetics and critical infrastructure such as water and wastewater systems."
