To provide Registered Nurses working in the emergency setting an opportunity to further develop the knowledge and skills necessary to care for patients presenting acutely with cardio-respiratory conditions

Learning outcomes

describe the role and scope of the emergency nurse.

discuss cardio-respiratory anatomy, physiology and the pathophysiological impact of alteration(s) in patients with cardio-respiratory conditions.

analyse common cardio-respiratory health alterations and patient responses in order to provide a rationale for collaborative interventions and evaluation.

undertake a focussed cardio-respiratory assessment in order to prioritise and rationalise nursing practice and collaborative intervention.

demonstrate a systematic approach to analysing the relationships between cardio-respiratory assessment, diagnostic indicators, interventions and evaluation.

discuss the effects that common pharmacological intervention and administration may have upon the individual patient.

understand the nursing responsibilities for current diagnostic and therapeutic modalities in cardiac and respiratory care.
