To enable Registered Nurses to extend their knowledge and skills in the assessment of children with an acute health alteration and to integrate their knowledge of normal processes and pathophysiology to nursing practice

Learning outcomes

demonstrate the ability to utilise rapid assessment frameworks when caring for children at risk of an acute illness.

for specific episodes of acute health alteration, selectively review the child's health history and determine the relevant assessment data required, utilising a problem-solving and family focused approach.

undertake a focused assessment of an unwell child (demonstrating consideration of the communication issues related to assessing an acutely unwell child) and analyse assessment findings to determine alterations from developmental norms and physiological responses to altered health status.

verbally report and document information from the history and examination accurately and succinctly.

critically evaluate assessment findings in order to identify and prioritise appropriate nursing interventions and timely referrals to other health professionals.
