Unsure of what she wanted to do for a career, Dannae Garrido decided to take a course that would equip her with a diverse range of skills for employment while allowing her to explore her options.
The course was the New Zealand Certificate in Foundation Skills. It aims to build on students’ skills and give them the confidence to take the next step into employment or further study, in whatever field interests them. The programme covers goal setting, budgeting, problem solving, communication skills, interpersonal skills, customer service, networking and health and safety in the workplace. Students are also guided in employment-related matters such as creating a CV, personal presentation and interview skills.
Dannae enjoyed the variety of the course and the opportunity it gave her to learn new things. “I liked doing projects in the computer room, going on field trips and meeting people for our industry topic weeks to hear about their experiences.”
The programme has given Dannae the step up she was seeking. She’s currently working in retail and will begin further study in the new year with the New Zealand Certificate in Early Childhood Education and Care, again at Ara.
“The course helped me become more confident,” Dannae says. “The staff are really supportive and always encouraging.”
