Te Wāhi

The Zone is located in Ara's new Whareora (science and wellbeing) building, which is a custom-built sport, exercise and health centre.

Within the centre we have state-of-the-art equipment that can help assess your health and exercise performance. For instance, we can provide a bioelectrical impedance analysis of your body composition to separately measure your muscle and fat mass in your arms, legs and trunk. In addition, we can measure the amount of lactate in your blood to determine your individual heart rate training zones which is also an indicator of anaerobic capacity.

The Zone also has access to all facilities within the Whareora including: the gym/weights room; sports court with wooden sprung floor and seating for 600; teaching and seminar rooms, exercise studios and student health.

The Zone equipment includes:

Inbody 230 bioelectrical impedance analyser

The Zone's sophisticated Inbody bioelectrical impedance analyser is used for our professional body composition analysis service. It is one of the most effective and accurate, non-invasive methods of body composition testing available which provides essential data for any weight loss and fitness programme. Clients feel extremely comfortable, as all you need to do is stand on the analyser in light clothing.

It measures and analyses an individual's body composition in terms of total body water, body fat mass and skeletal muscle mass. The BIA machine is so comprehensive that it includes your percentage of body fat as well as segmental lean analysis, highlighting how and where muscle mass is distributed throughout the body.

It allows us to regularly monitor your level of body fat, lean muscle mass and muscular development so you can understand how your diet, lifestyle and training regime are influencing your overall body composition.

Fusion Sport SmartSpeed (electronic speed timing gates)

The Fusion timing gates are used for 5 to 40 metre sprint tests and to assess critical aspects of sports performance including speed, endurance, race-pacing, reaction time and decision making in all land-based sports. The system works via electronic gates that sense the movement of the athlete and send information to our PDA.

Fusion Sport SmartJump

The SmartJump system is designed for testing and training athletes in power exercises. Vertical jump testing remains one of the most widely used methods for testing and training power and strength in a wide range of sports and SmartJump allows us to test power on all jumping exercises, simply and quickly.

Every jump is individually measured and a range of variables are generated automatically. The system works using a contact mat and sensors. It monitors details such as contact time, flight time, Reactive Strength Index (RSI), average power and impulse (net), recovery, training response and power gains. The system is transportable and can be used on the field or in a gym. It can be operated in real time mode, providing immediate feedback to coaches and athletes on every jump.

Swift Speedlight timing system (electronic speed timing gates)

The Swift Speedlight timing system is similar to our Fusion timing gates and used within the zone for 5 to 40 metre sprint tests.

Daum electronic ergo bike

Our four Daum ergo bikes are used for fitness assessments and physiology lab testing. The bikes are electronically controlled and adjust the braking load to fit the personal requirements of the user. This allows load setting continuously from 20 to 600 watt.

Monark ergo bikes

We have four Monark bikes which are also used for fitness assessments and physiology lab testing. The bike tracks results per minute for pedal turns, heart rate, cycling time and intended cycling speed in kilometre per hour. Braking power can be set to show results of calorie consumption and power.

Monark rehab trainer

The Monark 881E Rehab Trainer is used as either a leg or arm ergometer. These are used for Wingate tests to measure peak anaerobic power, as well as anaerobic capacity.

Swift Yardstick (vertical jump)

The Swift Yardstick is used to measure vertical jump height. It’s a very common test that measures explosive leg power in track and field and ball sports such as netball, basketball, football and volleyball.

Trackmaster treadmill

Our two Trackmaster treadmills are used for fitness assessments and physiology lab testing. These heavy-duty treadmills are controlled by Cardiac and Pulmonary Stress Testing Systems.

We have several dynamometers for measuring the maximum isometric strength of the hand and forearm muscles. Hand-grip strength is important for any sport in which the hands are used for catching, throwing or lifting.

Concept 2 rowing machine

The Concept 2 indoor rowing machine is popularly used by rowing programmes, health clubs and cardiac rehabilitation centres. This machine is used for fitness assessments.

Edan vital signs monitor

This monitor measures blood pressure and resting heart rate.

The Zone also has sit and reach boxes, medicine balls, Swiss balls and free weights.
