The sport and recreation centre at the Ara City campus on Madras Street provides high quality sport and recreational experiences for the benefit of Ara students, staff and the wider community. The broad range of recreational activities and services offered reflects the varied health, fitness and wellness needs of recreation centre customers.

Gym/Weights Room

You can access the City campus gym/weights room by purchasing a gym membership. This gives you full access to a well-appointed gym with a wide variety of weights machines, free weights and cardio equipment including treadmills, cross-trainers, rowing machines, spin bikes and a new state of-the-art Adaptive Motion Trainer.

To join or to renew your membership, follow these steps:

  1. Complete a gym membership form, available from the Whareora building or Rakaia Centre Atrium (City campus).
  2. Take the form and make your payment at the City campus Student Finance Office. Payment can be made by cash or EFTPOS. Currently we do not have an online payment option.
  3. Go to the City campus Security Desk to have your gym membership loaded onto your ID Card (you will be issued one if you do not have one).

  • Monday to Friday: 6am to 9pm
  • Saturday: 8am to 4pm

Personal Trainers

Personal training services are available if you require specific one-on-one training advice. We have a range of services to cater for different needs. For further information, including pricing, please contact personaltrainer@ara.ac.nz.

Sports Court

The sports court provides the opportunity to play badminton, basketball, volleyball, netball, futsal (indoor football), indoor touch, kīorahi, and perform fitness testing.

Sports court rules

  • Only non-marking footwear is allowed on the court (no street footwear permitted)
  • No food or drink is to be consumed on the court, except bottled water
  • No ball strikes towards the roof

Sports Court Bookings (City Campus)

Sports court bookings for students' sports and recreation activities must be arranged with your tutor who must use the timetabling booking system to book and confirm the session. We recommend your tutor supervises the activity.


Please note: due to health and safety requirements, the basketball hoops must only be moved and installed by a recreation centre staff member. There is a set schedule for moving the hoops. Please find the current schedule on the sports court doors.

Social Sports

The sports court hosts many of our sports and recreation events and activities throughout the year. The following are student or community-run social sports opportunities which are free for you to join at your leisure (no sign-up is needed). For up-to-date information on current groups, or how to start a group, visit Student Groups.

Group Fitness Classes

The City Campus recreation centre currently offers boxing and yoga classes to all students. All classes are located in the fitness studios on the second floor of the Whareora building (unless stated otherwise).
*Internal group fitness classes and social sports only run during term time.

Group membership discounts are also available to groups of eight or more, such as schools, sports teams and businesses. Contact reccentre@ara.ac.nz to enquire about pricing for your group.

Yoga - Christchurch

Stress busting, strength building, flexibility enhancing, angst-free yoga. No experience necessary. In the Whareora, room W224.

Personal Training

There is a personal training service available for those who desire specific one-on-one training advice. We have a range of services to cater to different needs.

Our City campus Health Centre (located in the Whareora) offers a physiotherapy service. This included acute/chronic injury management, acupuncture, strapping, post-operative rehabilitation, sport and work related injury rehabilitation.
