Certificate in Beginners Japanese

Start on a path towards communicating confidently in Japanese.

This intensive beginner’s course is designed to help you make rapid progress in learning Japanese. No prior knowledge of the language is required.

The focus is on equipping you to be able to communicate in everyday situations and to read, write and speak about familiar topics. You’ll learn how to use a range of expressions and phrases to initiate and respond to short, routine social interactions.

This course is available full-time over 19 weeks or part-time over a year.

What if English is not my first Language?

If English is not your first language, we want to make sure that you will be successful in your chosen programme of study.

  • Please provide a result from a test or qualification on the acceptable alternatives English Proficiency Outcomes Chart.
  • If you are a New Zealand Citizen or Permanent Resident, complete an Admission and Enrolment form and Ara will contact you regarding a free assessment.
  • If you are not a New Zealand Citizen or Permanent resident, book an IELTS or other test through the Ara Examination Centre or in your home country.
  • IELTS scores used must be taken from a single IELTS Test Report Form and are valid for two years from the date of the test.
  • What if I have achieved NCEA Level 3 University Entrance?
  • You do not need to provide additional evidence of English Language skills.

Knowledge of Japanese will give you an edge in careers in the tourism and hospitality industries. Being able to communicate with Japanese visitors in their own language adds value and makes interactions flow more smoothly. Language skills are also a distinct advantage in the fields of international education or business, when dealing with Japanese students or businesspeople.

Study pathways

On completion of this programme, you could continue your Japanese language journey with a Level 4 Certificate in Elementary Japanese (currently pending approval). Alternatively, you could pair this qualification with our Certificate in Teaching English to Speakers of Other Languages (CELTA) and set yourself up to teach English in Japan, or to Japanese speakers anywhere.
