Painting and decorating students at CPIT have risen to the challenge of painting an entire hall, completing the project for Mairehau Primary as the final part of their training at CPIT.

Tutors are keen to find more opportunities for students to work in the community after watching the students excel on site.

And while Mairehau Primary School enjoyed the output of a 17 person team at no cost, the students also benefitted hugely from the experience.

“They’ve learned the theory and practised on campus, now it’s so nice to see them take control. They have really stepped up to the challenge. They have to cooperate with each other; they have to come together and have a ‘toolbox talk’, make a plan and stick to the plan to get the job done,” tutor Tina Falconer said.

The students spent six days at the school putting their skills into action, sharing the work with students from CPIT’s He Toki ki te Rika (Māori Trades Training) painting and decorating programme.

Many of the students were attracted to the programme by the demand for painters in the current context of the Christchurch rebuild.
