Fantastical Wizard of Oz cake wins Edible Books 2020

10 August, 2020

This year’s Edible Books competition featured a variety of colourful entries, ranging from an enchanting (and award-winning) cake of Oz’s yellow brick road, to a cake featuring the menacing clown from Stephen King’s IT, to a very relatable earthquake damaged gingerbread house.

The experienced judging team consisted of Ara Art and Design lecturer Mark McEntyre, author and columnist Joe Bennett and Christchurch City Council librarian Donna Robertson.

Entries had to be inspired by a book title and had to be edible.

The awards were as follows:

  • Most imaginative: Big Little Lies (Julie Humby)
  • Most delectable: I Spy (Deidre Fraser)

  • Best in show: We’re Off to See the Wizard (Sofia Nygren)

The People’s Choice award also went to Sofia Nygren’s impressive entry ‘We’re Off to See the Wizard’ picked as the crowd favourite.

When the judging was complete, an appreciative crowd devoured most of the entries, leaving behind less appealing entries such as a bruised banana, and a decorated Clockwork Orange.
