Ara policies and procedures consultation – now open for colleague feedback

The New Zealand Broadcasting School (NZBS) investigation recommended some improvements to some of Ara’s policies and procedures. The suggested changes have been made, and we’re now welcoming colleague feedback on these revisions. We’re also consulting on additional policies revised as part of business as usual.

Policies and procedures recommended for revision in the NZBS investigation report

Summary of changes:

  • Two documents have been combined into one
  • A purpose has been added
  • Documents and principles that help guide colleague actions and behaviours (Ara’s purpose, values, values behaviours and strategic priorities) have been added
  • Additional definitions have been added
  • Examples of positive behaviours have been added
  • Explanations of what action is taken when there are breaches of the code have been added.

Summary of changes:

  • Types of complaint have been added and how each is managed (low-key, informal and formal)
  • Types of warning have been simplified and reduced from four types to three
  • Procedural requirements for a formal complaint have been expanded upon
  • Suspensions and dismissals sections have been added.

Summary of changes:

  • Refers to new Ara student complaint procedures
  • Refers and hyperlinks to all relevant policies and procedures
  • Definitions have been updated and expanded upon
  • Students’ ability to access wellbeing and independent advocacy support has been added
  • Examples of when a student can raise an external complaint or dispute have been added
  • A table of external complaint or appeal options has been added.

This policy has been created in response to the recommendations outlined in the NZBS investigation report. Because it is a new policy, there is no summary of changes.

Additional policies open for consultation as part of business as usual

Summary of changes:

  • Waituhi Policy Library and Ara website have been added to the list of official electronic repositories for Ara compliance documents
  • ‘InfoWeb’ has been replaced with ‘Waituhi’ (Ara’s intranet)
  • The Governance and Strategy Unit has been replaced with Director Organisational Insights and Compliance and/or Academic Quality Manager
  • The duration of consultation has been reduced to 15 working days
  • Consultation will not be required when policies require amendment for legislative currency, changes to roles/ titles/ names, and/or when the policy amendment is not considered to have impact or change the principles, intent, procedures and impact of the policy.
