The Rika Fund was established following the February 2011 earthquake in Christchurch.
The purpose of the Rika Fund is to support students to participate in international short-term exchanges or undertake courses of study according to criteria outlined below.
Scholarship/exchange funding applicants must be:
- New Zealand citizens or permanent residents who are currently studying Nursing or Japanese Language at Ara Institute of Canterbury or;
- Japanese citizens who are currently studying English or Nursing at Ara.
- Christchurch secondary school students in their final year of study who have an interest in Japanese language and culture, and who would like to experience a short term study opportunity at Kanto Gakuin High School in Yokohama, Japan.
No payment will be given for any scholarship or exchange which has already begun. Approval for funding must be made prior to the start date.
The exchange recipient should be able to demonstrate to Ara that they have taken steps to obtain funding from other sources and/or have worked to earn part of the funding. The exchange recipient will need to provide evidence of funds available to contribute to their expenses.

There is a maximum amount of assistance each student can access per year. Please see the Student & Staff Mobility Coordinator for more information.
