Programme Content

Get a hands-on introduction to the automotive industry.

This after school course is designed to provide you with practical experience in automotive engineering. The course is intended to support decision making about what it would be like to study with a tertiary provider in a practical setting. You will gain skills and knowledge to help you decide whether a future career in the automotive industry is for you.

You will:

  • Learn how to perform tasks in a safe manner in an automotive workshop
  • You will gain a general understanding of basic vehicle servicing and the principles of a four stroke engine.

Programme Structure

To complete this Youth programme you are required to do the NZQF unit standards outlined in the table below. The credits above are Ara credits which you will receive upon completion of this programme. Please note the number of credits may be different.

Academic requirements
  • To enrol you must 16 years or over and be a New Zealand citizen or permanent resident, or hold a visa which allows you to be enrolled in a New Zealand secondary school. If you are currently enrolled at a high school you will need to provide Approval of Enrolment from your school Principal.

  • If English is not your first language you are also required to provide evidence of your English language skills as listed below or credits in English rich subjects from New Zealand educational institutions. The automotive industry offers a diverse range of career options including work as a mechanic, automotive technician or collision repair specialist (panel beater, refinisher).

Study pathways

Further skills can be gained with STAR and Gateway options as well as the Canterbury Tertiary College one or two day Introduction to Automotive and Engineering Trades programmes in 2017. Further study could include the Certificate in Automotive Engineering - Collision Repair, or Light Vehicle Automotive.
