Develop your communication, café and barista skills and improve your understanding of business operating procedures.

You, your employer and Ara will enter a training agreement that will provide:

  • An individual training plan with regular feedback as you progress through the programme
  • On-job training and coaching from your employer and Ara industry training professionals
  • Off-job practical and knowledge training in our specialist barista and training restaurant/café spaces at Ara
  • Access to our Barista Online training package
  • Practical, on-the-job assessment opportunities to showcase your excellent service and communication techniques.

This programme is also available as full time study option .

Study pathways

Graduates may gain further valuable skills with the New Zealand Certificate in Food and Beverage Service Level 4 or the New Zealand Diploma in Hospitality Management.

  • This programme has open entry. English language requirements apply.

Additional requirements
    • You must be physically able to undertake the practical components of the programme.
    • In order to apply for this programme, you must be employed in a café or barista setting for a minimum of 20 hours per week.
    • This workplace strand of this programme involves a three-way training agreement with you, your employer and Ara.
    • International students are not eligible for workplace study due to immigration requirements to attend 20 hours of class per week.

    If English is not your first language, we want to make sure that you will be successful in your chosen programme of study.

    Please provide a result from a test or qualification on the acceptable alternatives English Proficiency Outcomes Chart. .


    If you are a New Zealand Citizen or Permanent Resident, complete an Admission and Enrolment form and Ara will contact you regarding a free assessment.

    What if I have achieved NCEA Level 3 University Entrance?

    You do not need to provide additional evidence of English Language skills.
