Complete the final stage toward becoming a registered electrician with our comprehensive programme of electrical practices.

You will expand your skills and working knowledge of electrical switchboards, lighting, three phase transformers, programmable logic controllers, semiconductor power devices, AC power and power factor as well as AC electric motor control and installation.

Other study includes industrial process control and theory for registration of electricians with on-job units related to demonstrating your knowledge and applying electrical legislation. Codes of practice and standards, procedures for examination and testing of electrical installations plus describing and using complex electrical instruments are also studied.

In order to undertake this programme you must be physically able to work safely in an industry related work environment.

It is a robust and comprehensive Apprentice Training Programme combining the best parts of traditional apprenticeships with modern teaching and learning techniques. As an electrical apprentice, you'll receive a minimum of four on-site visits a year by a qualified electrical tutor who will record evidence of your practical learning.

Credit recognition

Credit recognition is available for this programme; if you have related skills, knowledge and/or experience, it may count towards part or even all of the qualification.

Entry requirements

Academic requirements
  • NCEA Level 1 in Mathematics, English, and Physics or General Science or equivalent qualifications before starting programmes leading to the qualification.

Alternative requirements
  • Evidence of employment in the electrical industry or evidence of actively pursuing employment in the electrical industry and the National Certificate in Electrical Engineering Level 3*.

    *According to Skills Organisation policies, applicants may be accepted with a minimum of 80% of the Level 3 qualification credits completed with the remainder of the credits subject to second results.

Additional requirements
  • A current training agreement and employment in the industry.

English requirements
  • If English is not your first language you may also be required to provide evidence of your English language skills. If you have no evidence of your English language skills and are a New Zealand citizen or permanent resident, contact us for an assessment.

    Note: Students who have achieved NCEA Level 3 University Entrance requirements are not required to provide evidence of English Language Skills.
