This programme will give you the core knowledge and skills required to work in a laboratory. It will assist in developing your abilities if you are already working in a laboratory. Particular focus is on the requirements for the food processing industry.

Essential to advances in society, science careers feature on the New Zealand Skills Shortage List.

This programme covers:

  • Basic knowledge of chemistry, biology, microbiology, laboratory skills and computer laboratory skills.
  • Developing an understanding of the processes involved in a laboratory on a day-to-day basis.
  • Students must complete the following seven modules to get the certificate:
    • Chemistry
    • Microbiology
    • Statistics
    • Biology
    • Maths
    • Laboratory skills
    • Science - computing

Entry requirements

Academic requirements
  • For entry to this qualification it is desirable that you have a minimum (or equivalent) of 36 NCEA credits at Level 1 (or equivalent), made up of 12 credits at NCEA Level 1 in english, 12 credits at NCEA Level 1 in maths and a minimum of 12 credits at NCEA Level 1 in at least one other subject.

    • Applications from mature students (over 20 years) are welcome.
