Extend your joinery expertise to suit your employment circumstances.
This programme offers specialisations in four areas: cabinetry, timber door and windows, timber stairs, and laminate fabrication. Depending on your employment circumstances and career aspirations, you can choose one strand, or all four strands if you wish to attain 'craftsman' certification. Your training (which is delivered by way of block courses and evening classes) will fill gaps in your experience that might otherwise have been gained in your workplace.
Please note: This programme includes an apprenticeship.
If you have work experience in this area, or a relevant prior qualification, you may be eligible for credit recognition towards this qualification.
To complete this Certificate you are required to complete a minimum total of 158 credits. Please browse the guide below to view the course options currently available within this qualification.
To be a full time student you need to maintain a workload of 120 credits per year. We recommend you talk with us to ensure you choose electives to benefit your future career.
40 credits NCEA Level 1, including 10 literacy credits and 10 numeracy credits,
OR Candidates may have completed the New Zealand Certificate in Construction Trade Skills (Level 3) Joinery strand
Skills for tertiary study (including literacy and numeracy) may be acquired through study, work and/or life experience. Students who can demonstrate these skills may be approved for alternative entry. Literacy and numeracy assessments are available.
Students must be employed in the joinery industry at the time of study. Students must enter into a 3-way training agreement between the candidate, employer and Ara.
If English is not your first language you may also be required to provide evidence of your English language skills. If you have no evidence of your English language skills and are a New Zealand citizen or permanent resident, contact us for an assessment.
Note: IELTS scores used must be taken from a single IELTS Test Report Form and are valid for two years from the date of the test
Students who have achieved NCEA Level 3 University Entrance requirements are not required to provide evidence of English language skills.

Depending on the strands taken, this qualification will enable you to work competently within specialist areas of the trade, manufacturing joinery components such laminated fabrication items, stairs, windows and cabinetry.
Following completion of this programme, you can move into training in supervision or management.
