Gain essential practical skills and knowledge to start a career in the motor industry.

Covering many facets of vehicle service and repair, this programme is designed to equip you with essential skills for entry level positions in the industry.

You'll learn about safe working practices, general engineering and welding. You'll get hands-on experience working with light vehicle electrics, fuel systems and general maintenance, as well as transmission systems, brakes and steering. You'll also learn how to disassemble and reassemble two- and four-stroke and diesel engines.

This programme is also offered for Youth Guarantee students. You can apply for these options if you're 16 to 19 years of age and no longer at school, or if you're planning on leaving school.

Credit recognition

Credit recognition is available for this programme; if you have related skills, knowledge and/or experience, it may count towards part or even all of the qualification.

Entry requirements

Academic requirements
  • For entry to our Certificate in Motor Industry it is desirable that you have at least 3 years secondary education and at least 24 credits at NCEA Level 1 (or equivalent) made up of at least 12 credits in english and at least 12 credits in maths.

Alternative requirements
  • Applications from mature students (over 20 years) are welcome.

    If you don't have the stated entry criteria, talk to us about whether you have the equivalent skills and knowledge or to determine if this is the right programme for you.

Additional requirements
  • You will also be asked to attend an interview and complete a pre-entry test to indicate your level of literacy, numeracy and technical skills.
