To enable Registered Nurses to understand the impact problematic alcohol and other drug use has on individuals and gain knowledge and skills to effectively support people with alcohol and other drug issues who present to their service.

Learning outcomes

  • identify and apply knowledge to alcohol and other drug use and its impact on an individual, family/whanau and the community.
  • undertake a 'brief' Alcohol and Drug Assessment on an individual who may present with an alcohol and drug problem/issue.
  • formulate an appropriate management plan based on the findings of the 'brief' assessment.
  • use motivational interviewing as an intervention technique for managing change.
  • utilise the Registered Nurse role to support a person with problematic alcohol and other drug use.
