To enable Registered Nurses to extend their knowledge and skills in assessment of children's health status and to integrate their knowledge of normal processes and pathophysiology to nursing practice in the community.

Learning outcomes

  • undertake a comprehensive health history focused on the child and their family and conduct a systematic physical examination of a well-child demonstrating consideration for the child's development.
  • for specific episodes of ill health selectively review the child's health history and determine the relevant physical examination required, utilising an investigative framework.
  • undertake and analyse a child's history and physical examination findings to determine alterations from normal and physiological responses to altered health status.
  • verbally report and document information accurately from the history and examination.
  • critically evaluate history and examination findings to make judgments for timely referral to other health professionals and make a decision about appropriate nurse intervention and health promotion.
