To enable students to understand theoretical frameworks related to mental health and how the use of these can influence mental health or addiction nursing across the lifespan.

Learning outcomes

discuss the aetiology, pathophysiology and presentation of major mental illnesses and addictions and their impact on people (including Maori), family and whanau, at different life stages.

discuss and analyse the concept of recovery in mental health and addiction services.

discuss nursing assessments and analyse interventions to assist people who are experiencing an altered mental health or addiction status.

analyse the impact of mental illness on a person, family, whanau with a disability.

discuss relevant legislation and analyse ethical issues related to mental health.
