As a single mother of two boys, and with no high school qualifications, she felt understandably apprehensive about attending Ara's New Brighton Campus Connect.
"I remember being so nervous when I first started – I had no confidence," she says. "It was a real challenge for me to just come in and start."
She had heard about the course through a friend and decided to sign up. "I didn't learn that much in high school and I wanted to learn more about computers. Plus, it was something I could work in around my young children. I thought I'd give it a go."
Since then, she's never looked back. "I am so glad I took the first step and enrolled on the first course," Sheena says.
"I can honestly say that coming here has been one of the best things I have done for myself. My confidence has improved massively and the staff have been fantastic in supporting me."
Sheena completed her National Certificate in Computing Level 2 in 2014 and is now well on the way to completing her Level 3 certificate. "It's pretty amazing looking back at how far I've come over the last year."
Since then she has encouraged several of her friends to join up to the course to further their computer skills. "I'm spreading the word. I would say to anyone thinking about starting to just do it. You won't regret it."
Now, Sheena is on the hunt for a job and knows the Campus Connect course has provided her with the expertise and confidence to succeed.
"I was also able to study MYOB at New Brighton and now have the skills I need to get back into the workforce," she says. "I'm starting to apply for positions and it feels great to have these qualifications on my CV. I couldn't have done it without taking that first step."
