About animal science
Studies in animal science can open the door to many interesting and varied fields of work in veterinary clinics and animal facilities.
Students who study an animal science qualification can find themselves at the forefront of all aspects of professional animal care. You'll develop the skills and attitudes required to oversee the care of animals in an animal facility, or assist with a range of procedures in a veterinary clinic. Eventually you could perform a range of support tasks in a veterinary clinic.
Studying animal science
At Ara there is a strong focus on applied learning. Students in the animal science programmes will complete a mix of theoretical and practical training and subjects will include: animal behaviour and handling, animal anatomy, husbandry and breeding, facilities animal management, animal accommodation, surgical and anaesthetic training, clinical nursing, management of veterinary nursing practices and veterinary diagnostics.
Our tutors are fully qualified veterinary nurses or vets with impressive industry relationships in Christchurch and nationwide. The President of the New Zealand Veterinary Nurses Association, the Chair of the Animal Science and Technology Board (a standing subcommittee of the New Zealand Veterinary Association) and renowned dog behaviour expert Nicole Eltringham-Young are all Ara staff. We work closely with animal facilities and veterinary clinics in Christchurch who come to us to recruit students for work placement opportunities and later employment for graduates.
