Auditions

If you are planning to study Music Arts at Ara, you will be required to audition.

If your application is successful, you will be contacted to arrange an audition time.
Auditions for will take place in Christchurch from 1 -3 October and 3 – 5 December 2018.

Please download and complete the Music Arts audition application pack and either the domestic admission and enrolment form, or the international admission and enrolment form.

Audition information

Musical audition

A 12-bar blues to play/sing the melody and improvise on. You need to provide your own backing – either recorded or accompanying musicians. Piano, drums and amps will be provided.

And either: A jazz standard performed in a jazz style with the melody and one or two choruses of improvisation over the form of the tune. Bassists should show the ability to play a walking line, and guitarists and pianists need to comp the chord changes over a chorus.

Or:

A pop or rock tune of your choice that demonstrates your techniqueand performance skills.

Theory test

As part of the audition there will be a short aural test which includes singing back a melody, identifying intervals, identifing major and minor chords and clapping back a rhythm. Before your audition you will be asked to complete a music theory sheet to establish your current knowledge of key signatures, note names, rhythmic notation and chord spelling.
