About hairdressing

The hairdressing industry is vibrant, dynamic and ever-evolving. It offers the opportunity to be creative and to enjoy real career progression, from apprentice through to senior stylist roles, or even salon ownership. You can also participate in national and international competitions or work in film or television and earn recognition for your skills and creativity.

Studying hairdressing

Our purpose-built facilities provide a professional salon environment with up-to-date equipment and In our purpose-designed hairdressing salons in either Christchurch or Timaru you'll learn the skills and knowledge needed for a career as a hairdresser.

Specifically you'll learn about appointment booking practices, the use of appointment systems, customer service, scheduling, and technical aspects such as colour treatments, cutting techniques, blow drying and styling techniques.

You'll do all this while gaining the equivalent of your first year apprenticeship qualification. You can further your knowledge and artistic ability with the second year programme, or opt for a HITO (Hair Industry Training Organisation) apprenticeship involving on-the-job training and assessments at Ara.

When you study hairdressing with us, you'll be supported and encouraged by our passionate hairdressing tutors who all continue to work in the industry. They also have extensive industry contacts and are often contacted by employers seeking graduate recommendations for employment.
