Te Whare a-Rēhia City campus Sport and Recreation Centre

The sport and recreation centre at the Ara City campus on Madras Street provides high quality sport and recreational experiences for the benefit of Ara students, staff and the wider community. The broad range of recreational activities and services offered reflects the varied health, fitness and wellness needs of recreation centre customers.

Gym/Weights Room

You can access the City campus gym/weights room by purchasing a gym membership. This gives you full access to a well-appointed gym with a wide variety of weights machines, free weights and cardio equipment including treadmills, cross-trainers, rowing machines, spin bikes and a new state of-the-art Adaptive Motion Trainer.

To join or to renew your membership, follow these steps:

  1. Complete a gym membership form, available from the Whareora building or Rakaia Centre Atrium (City campus).
  2. Take the form and make your payment at the City campus Student Finance Office. Payment can be made by cash or EFTPOS. Currently we do not have an online payment option.
  3. Go to the City campus Security Desk to have your gym membership loaded onto your Student ID Card.

Opening hours: 

  • Monday to Friday: 6.30am to 9pm
  • Saturday: 8am to 4pm
  • Sunday: closed

Gym tours and equipment inductions are available Monday and Wednesday at 12.15pm. Meet in the Whareora foyer area (outside the gym/weights room at City campus). Tours take approximately 20 minutes.

Personal Trainers

Personal training services are available if you require specific one-on-one training advice. For further information, including pricing, please contact reccentre@ara.ac.nc.

Sports Court

The sports court provides the opportunity to play badminton, basketball, volleyball, netball, futsal (indoor football), indoor touch, kīorahi, and perform fitness testing.

The court is available for free use Monday to Friday between 8am and 5pm unless there is a class booked to use it.

Sports court rules

  • Only non-marking footwear is allowed on the court (no street footwear permitted)
  • No food or drink is to be consumed on the court, except bottled water

Sports Court Bookings (City Campus)

Sports court bookings for students' sports and recreation activities must be arranged with your tutor who must use the timetabling booking system to book and confirm the session. We recommend your tutor supervises the activity.

Sports Equipment Hire (City Campus)

Sports equipment is available for hire to use in the sports court: 

When: Monday to Firday: 12pm-1pm and 3pm-3.15pm

Where: Equipment is available from the office opposite the Gym/Weights Room (City Campus) during opening hours. Equipment must be returned to the equipment drop-box in the sports court no later than 5pm the day of hire.

Basketball:

Please note: due to health and safety requirements, the basketball hoops must only be moved and installed by a recreation centre staff member. There is a set schedule for moving the hoops. Please find the current schedule on the sports court doors.   

Netball/Volleyball/Badminton:

Volleyball and badminton nets and netball hoops are also available for use and require a staff member to access this equipment and help set it up. This can be arranged for scheduled social sports court bookings. Please contact reccentre@ara.ac.nz to discuss this.

Social Sports

The sports court hosts many of our sports and recreation events and activities throughout the year. The following are student or community-run social sports opportunities which are free for you to join at your leisure (no sign-up is needed). For up-to-date information on current groups, or how to start a group, visit the Student Groups.

Outdoor Leisure Club 

This student-led group gives students many opportunities to meet new people, see new places and enjoy a variety of generously subsidized outdoor activities and events. Contact araoutdoorleisureclub@gmail.com and like the Facebook page to keep up to date with events.

Social Badminton

Friday 4.45pm-6.45pm. All levels welcome. Contact reccentre@ara.ac.nz for more information. Cost $5/person.

Social Floorball

Thursday 8pm-9.30pm. All levels welcome. Contact: floorball.christchurch@gmail.com for more information. Cost $5/Ara student, $8/community member.

Social Futsal League

Thursday 12pm-1pm, free. You don't need to have played futsal before and all levels are welcome. Contact reccentre@ara.ac.nz or just come along on any Thursday to check it out.

Social Netball

Tuesday 12pm-1pm, free. You don't need to have played Netball before and all levels are welcome. Contact: reccentre@ara.ac.nz or just come along on any Tuesday to check it out.

Social Volleyball

If you'd like to start a social volleyball group for 2016, please contact reccentre@ara.ac.nz. We can make a court booking for you, and help to advertise your group.

Group Fitness Classes

The City Campus recreation centre currently offers boxing and yoga classes to all students. All classes are located in the fitness studios on the second floor of the Whareora building (unless stated otherwise).

Yoga

Stress busting, strength building, flexibility enhancing, angst-free yoga. No experience necessary. In the Whareora, room W224.

Boxing

Fitness class tailored for everyone, using equipment and techniques to get your heart pumping. No experience necessary. Instructed by qualified Olympic boxing coach Paul Fitzsimmons (Fitzy). In the Whareora, room W223.

Our City campus Health Centre (located in the Whareora) offers a physiotherapy service. This included acute/chronic injury management, acupuncture, strapping, post-operative rehabilitation, sport and work related injury rehabilitation.
