CPIT’s students from the National Academy of Singing and Dramatic Art are gearing up to perform an “electrifying fusion of morality, sexuality and rock music”.

The third year students will perform Spring Awakening at The Court Theatre from October 17th-19th.

Head of NASDA Richard Marrett says Spring Awakening is based on a controversial German play written in 1891 which was initially banned because of the content.

“It’s a modern musical set in 19th Century Germany with a backdrop of rock music. The play is about a group of young people discovering their sexuality and shows how things are in many ways quite similar now to how they were back then,” he says.

“For example, the opening scene is a daughter asking her mother about where babies come from. Her mother is unable to tell her, so the daughter ends up pregnant and doesn’t know how.”

The original Broadway production of Spring Awakening won eight prestigious Tony Awards, including for Best Musical, Direction, Book, Score and Featured Actor. The original cast album also received a Grammy Award.

Marrett says the play is “perfect” for the third year NASDA students.

“We have a very talented group of 15 students that fits the cast of this show. It’s going to be a very, very strong production. We have just finished intensive music rehearsals and it’s sounding fantastic. We’re now working with the director. ”

Marrett is the musical director of the play, while Stephen Robertson will direct. This year NASDA is celebrating its 20th anniversary and Marrett says they have received some special help with the production this year.

“The Court Theatre have very kindly shown their support for us in our 20th year by letting us put our showcase production on their main stage for a week. This is a great opportunity for our students.”
