CPIT’s National Academy of Singing and Dramatic Art (NASDA) students were buzzing after a visit from legendary British actress and singer Elaine Paige this week. Paige told stories of humble beginnings, shared some professional advice and was treated to several songs by the entire NASDA group. She was so impressed she then invited the entire group to perform at her concert at CBS Arena.

“What are you doing tonight?” she asked the students, who looked stunned to think they might perform during the star’s concert. Paige was serious and by 6pm the students were doing a sound check. They performed the song Heart and Music.

Paige has starred in numerous West End and Broadway productions and was instrumental in the creation of popular musicals 'Chess' and 'Cats'. For the NASDA students it was an unforgettable occasion, especially as they were able to ask questions and have their photos taken with the star.

Paige said the visit was “a marvelous treat” and was visibly moved by the students’ performance.

“It was very emotional I could see all these beautiful young faces looking back at me and singing with all of their heart and mind and soul and it was very emotional because it reminded me of my own youth and my own drama school; just wonderful to see their enthusiasm…so full of hope and expectation of what is to come for them in the future in the theatre and music business.

“Of course you know that Nic Kyle who is performing with me on this tour of New Zealand and Australia came from this very school so it is rather apt that I have been able to come and say hello to the pupils today.”
