CPIT’s National Academy of Singing and Dramatic Arts is celebrating 20 years training the best performers in the business this year, but is showing no signs of slowing down.

NASDA’s 20th year as an institution will be busier than ever, with the academy putting on eight shows, as well as an additional performance at the Court theatre and a celebration over Queen’s Birthday Weekend.

NASDA will kick off the busy year with their first production of the year, Pippin the musical, opening in theatre from April 11. Pippin is a magical coming-of-age story set in post-quake Christchurch and will performed by the second year NASDA students.

After Pippin, NASDA students will be performing various other theatre ensembles throughout the year, including A Comedy of Errors, Dogg’s Hamlet and A Midsummer Night’s Dream.

NASDA’s third year students will also perform Spring Awakening at the Court Theatre from October 17. The play is a rock musical with music by Duncan Sheik and based on a German poem.

“We routinely produce about eight show seasons in any one year and this year is no different,” Marrett says.

“However, we have the reunion in June and the Spring Awakening at the Court Theatre which are new dimensions for 2014.”

A 20th Celebration will be held over Queen’s Birthday Weekend from May 31st to June 2nd. NASDA was formed as a private training establishment in 1994 and was originally called ASDA, the Academy of Singing and Dance. It was originally located at the Music Centre buildings in Barbadoes St before later coming to CPIT in 2008.

Marrett was looking forward to the celebration of the academy’s two decades.

“It will be a wonderful time, where we see people come together who studied so closely with one another during their times at NASDA, as well as a time to pay tribute to some of those instrumental in the course’s beginnings,” he says.
