A whole lotta shaking and stirring was going on at CPIT this week with the Food and Hospitality department hosting finalists in the international Bacardi Legacy Cocktail Competition 2015.

Two of the three New Zealand finalists demonstrated their drink-mixing prowess to CPIT food and hospitality students, including Diploma in Hospitality Management, Café Barista and Restaurant Service course participants, who attended the event at the institute's training bar on Wednesday (November 18).

Getting a big bang for their Bacardi buck: Bar professionals Charles Gillet of Dux Central's The Poplar Social Club (pictured) and James Crinson of Lalaland Wanaka will be battlling it out to win a trip to San Franciso for the international Bacardi Legacy Cocktail Competition 2015. They were at CPIT this week demonstrating their cocktail making skills to food and hospitality students.

Charles Gillet of Dux Central's The Poplar Social Club and James Crinson of Lalaland Wanaka have come up with not so secret cocktail concoctions, the recipes for which will be promoted through a variety of mediums, including social media, to gain a fan following.

These movers and shakers of the cocktail making world have until February 22 next year to market themselves and get their recipe out there. The one with the most legitimate hits will represent New Zealand at the global final at San Francisco April 2016.

Charles's "Te Coco" recipe consists of 45mls Bacardi, 30mls martini extra dry, 15mls coconut water, two dashes of orange bitters, grape fruit zest and a maraschino cherry on top.

James's "Te Anaka" recipe consists of 45mls Bacardi, 30mls honey water, 15 mls Fino sherry, 15mls lemon juice and a 15mls egg white.

CPIT Food and Hospitality senior academic staff member Cheryl Stokes said the demonstration was a great opportunity for top bartenders to practice presenting their cocktails to a captive audience of trainees excited about bartending.

"Our students observed professional bartenders working in our bar and could see that the techniques and skills they had learned in class were similar.  They got an insight into the Bacardi legacy competition, had the opportunity to make the winning cocktails one on one with both James and Charles and were inspired to continue in the industry and possibly one day compete."
