CPIT Trades Technician Bruce Martin was honoured at the Canterbury Sports Awards recently, receiving a Lifetime Achievement Award in recognition of his 50 years of basketball. Martin has been involved with the sport since 1963; playing, refereeing, reporting, being a part of various committees and governing bodies, and managing tournaments both in New Zealand and internationally.

“I am greatly honoured to receive this award as recognition of what I have achieved,” Martin says.

He has received numerous other awards for his impressive and for the most part voluntary contribution to the sport, including a 50 Year Service Award from Basketball New Zealand and the Canterbury Basketball Association. He also received the 2005 Most Outstanding Volunteer Administrator at the notable Hadlee Sports Awards.

Some of Martin’s most memorable basketball achievements include two trips to the Special Olympic World Games as an International Basketball Official in 2003 and 2011, a role he hopes to fulfil again in Los Angeles in 2015.

“There are so many memorable moments for me in 50 years but something that really stands out was the opening ceremony in Dublin [at the Special Olympic World Games] with 85,000 spectators and every person with a coloured flag waving in unison,” he says.

Refereeing on the horizon

Martin is now trying out a different side of basketball for the summer, refereeing children entering into the sport.

“Instead of refereeing Senior Summer League for adults I am refereeing seven to eight year olds – many playing their first games and teaching them the rules as we go, which is very satisfying and fun,” he says.

With 50 years behind him in the sport Martin isn’t ready to retire yet and he sees himself continuing to be involved with the local and international basketball community for years to come.
