Fast track to jobs helped by speed interviews

The Institution of Professional Engineers New Zealand, IPENZ, is holding its popular speed interviewing night on Wednesday (May 20).

IPENZ student members undertaking accredited engineering qualifications at CPIT, the Open Polytechnic and the University of Canterbury are invited to attend the free event, which will be held at the University of Canterbury from 5.30 pm to 8.30pm.

IPENZ's marketing manager Kavita Kansara said speed interviewing had proven to be a great opportunity for student engineers to practise their interview skills in a safe environment.  She encouraged staff and industry to go along and be 'mock interviewers'.

"Students are interviewed for seven minutes and then given three minutes of feedback. The evening is lots of fun and the students certainly appreciate the advice of the mock interviewers. In some cases, it is the first time a student has ever had an interview."

CPIT engineering graduates Marc Jensen (pictured right in photograph) and David Blackler, who are employed by award-winning Christchurch engineering consultancy TM Consultants, said they could not recommend highly enough using any opportunity to improve or enhance interviewing skills.

"Realistically, in the work place, potential clients or future bosses decide whether they want you in the first minute or two," Jensen said.

"Using skills learnt from high pressure quick-fire meetings really empowers you to make an impact."

Highly-tuned communication skills were vital, Blackler said.

"Having good 'soft skills' and being able to communicate ideas in a time pressured environment is such an important skill for graduates to have, especially in the world of consulting where we spend so much time talking to clients, architects and even other engineers."

IPENZ non-members are also welcome to attend the evening.
