CPIT students chalk up amazing radio experience

CPIT's broadcasting students are set to launch New Zealand's only radio station aimed at pre-teens and their parents.

The brand new radio station for CPIT's New Zealand Broadcasting School for 2015 will be called 'Chalk 96.1FM'. Station Manager and CPIT student Connar Fife says Chalk will provide 8-12 year olds with the latest tunes and news. All content will be age appropriate, and the Top 40 tracks will be pumping, Fife says.

"Chalk is all about fun and energy. We will be bringing something different and exciting for the pre-teens that they haven't really had before," he says. "We'll also be talking about issues like anti-bullying and going to high school to make the content very topical and relatable."

Parents will also enjoy the station, with some of the afternoon content targeted towards them.

The task for creating Chalk 96.1 began seven months ago, when CPIT students conducted extensive research to find space in the market for a new, commercially viable radio station.

This culminated in radio pitches in March, where groups of students presented their ideas to representatives from the commercial radio industry and CPIT tutors who picked the best station from three, very different, options.

Industry professionals who attended this year's event included Sarah Gandy, ZM content director, Tim Dyer from NZME, Ryan Rathbone from Mediaworks and Adam Perry, creative director for Mediaworks Canterbury.

Chalk won the recent radio pitches at CPIT, beating out competing radio stations The Blend, a station targeted at providing 20 something females with acoustic tunes, and Atlas, whose listeners would have enjoyed a mix of reggae, dub and indie rock.

CPIT tutor Dr Brendan Reilly says Chalk was chosen because of its unique position as the only radio station targeted at pre-teens and their parents.

"The reasons why Chalk 96.1 was chosen by the radio industry was the ability to provide for an audience that is not directly being catered for in the commercial radio industry," he says. "Chalk will also provide our students with the learning opportunities created in trying to connect with an audience that is outside their comfort zone."

The station will launch on May 4th 2015, replacing last year's winning radio station Jacked FM. "We're really excited to get started and get this into the marketplace," Fife says.
