CPIT donates $10,000 to SPCA

CPIT has given away $30,000 in funding to deserving community projects, including an initiative to reduce the dumping of unwanted dogs.

CPIT’s Time2Give Community funding programme was launched earlier in the year. CPIT received 17 applications for funding and over 160 CPIT staff voted for what organisations in our community they would like to see supported.

The biggest recipient of the funds was the Canterbury SPCA, who received $10,000 to educate dog owners about responsible dog ownership through community centre open days, leaflets and providing free micro-chipping and de-sexing.

SPCA Canterbury Chief Executive Officer Barry Helem says Christchurch has a raft of community dog issues including, strays on the streets, sick and injured dogs, dumping of unwanted dogs and abuse and neglect of dogs. “Without intervention and prevention these problems are growing exponentially. We hope this money will allow us to help people who want to do the right thing but don’t have the resources or support,” he says.

Helem believes educating people about dogs and de-sexing dogs will reduce the number of stray dogs on the streets, minimise unwanted litters of puppies being dumped and therefore reduce dog neglect and abuse citywide. “We want to be the fence at the top of the hill rather than the ambulance at the bottom. We’re very thankful for CPIT’s donation and the work it will enable us to do in promoting responsible pet ownership.”

CPIT communications manager Linda Reed presented the $10,000 cheque to the SPCA at a presentation on September 22nd. “It’s a great cause and we know the money will be spent wisely,” she says.

The programme is being run in conjunction with the Christchurch City Council Animal Control and Housing New Zealand Corporation. Housing New Zealand area manager Fraser Benson says: “It’s a fantastic initiative and will really benefit our communities. We want to encourage all our tenants to look after their pets properly.”

The first SPCA community centre drop-in clinic will be open on Thursday 30th September from 1pm to 3pm at the Aranui Heartlands Service Centre in Hampshire Street.

All Time2Give recipients 2014:

Christchurch SPCA - $10,000 to educate dog owners about responsible dog ownership through community centre open days, leaflets and providing free micro –chipping.

Youth Alive - $2,000 to help with putting a music room together - maybe purchasing equipment such as a recording desk and possible designing the room from our music tutors and students.

Pregnancy Helpline - $1,050 to purchase 20 x 4 ply wool for woollen singlets and 60 x 8 ply wool for baby blankets.

Te Ahikaaroa Kapa Haka - $3,600 to buy 100 uniforms for their kapa haka group with CPIT logos as sponsors

Aranui Eagles League - $600 to help cover the cost of 18 team hoodies for an Aranui Eagles League team.

Inner City East Cycles - $1,500 to purchase tools, including crank pullers, adjustable toothed wrench and adjustable dual pin wrench, to help fix bikes for no charge.

North Arts Project - $3,000 to present an art exhibition and series of artists’ talks in late 2014 as well as help to develop an on-going community project with Plant Gang.

Adult Conductive Trust - $1,000 to assist with fundraising assistance, marketing, IT support (Pay a student to assist).

Christchurch Fellowship of Song, Dance and Drama - $2,000 to promote Chinese Performing Arts through funding for costumes, instruments and travel costs.

O Le Au Fetau - $2,000 to help keep the Samoan language alive through support for venue hire, family camps, and to buy resources to develop the language in the home.
