Ara Institute of Canterbury has been talking with the Kaikōura community to see how the town is progressing in the aftermath of the Kaikōura earthquake.  One of the messages that came across from the local Runanga o Kaikōura and community was that there has not been enough access to information about tertiary training and employment opportunities for their Māori Rangatahi and the wider community.

It has been over two years since Kaikōura High School hosted the annual careers expo and the community has decided to bring it back and enable local people to find out about training options.

The community and Kaikōura Rūnanga will host an event for youth and the community. The Kaikōura Careers Expo at the local Takahanga Marae is on August 9, between 9.00am to 1.00pm.

The expo will give secondary school students, as well as members of the Kaikōura community, an opportunity to come and talk to tutors about study and training options offered at the various Institutes and organisations.

For example, Ara offers apprenticeships and workplace-based training in Trades and Hospitality in Kaikōura and is a member of the TANZ online portfolio of online programmes, which includes retail, business admin, and project management.

Ara is coordinating the attendance of the Universities of Canterbury and Lincoln, Nelson Marlborough Institute of Technology, Otago Polytechnic and five Industry Training Organisations.

Bringing all the main South Island tertiary education providers to the Marae will make it easy for people to explore study options and get to know organisations first hand. A hangi will encourage people to network informally as well.

Ara offers programmes from certificate to post graduate level. To find out more, ring 0800 24 24 76.
