Medals at Toque D’or for Timaru team

Ara Institute of Canterbury’s Nestle Toque D’or team poured their hearts into the prestigious national culinary competition last Thursday, achieving two gold medals for the kitchen team and a bronze for the restaurant service.

Teams competing in the event are made up of two culinary and one front-of-house student; Ara sent top students from Timaru: Level 5 cookery and patisserie student Denice Marayag, Level 5 cookery student Edsant Obillo and Level 3 food and beverage student Torryn Williams to the 2017 competition.

They put in many hours of preparation, assisted by tutors Steve Le Corre, Jill Millburn and Rob Hunt, completed 10 full practice runs at Ara and then competed for three hours in the live cook-off, under pressure, in Auckland last weekend.

Top industry judges included WorldChefs President Thomas Gugler of Germany. The panel of judges was led by high profile chef and leading culinary figure Darren Wright of Christchurch. Competing teams were marked against WorldChefs International Judging Standards which include food preparation, presentation, taste and service.

The event which has been running for 27 years is a key fixture on the culinary calendar and is hotly contested by the country’s leading hospitality institutes.

Overall winners of the event were the team from Toi Ohomai Institute of Technology in Rotorua which also picked up a special innovation award.
