CPIT provides skills for brilliant radio career

The new content director of New Zealand's largest independent broadcaster credits CPIT with providing him the skills for a brilliant radio career.

Leon Wratt, who has been recently appointed Group Content Director for all the music brands at MediaWorks, attended the New Zealand Broadcasting School at CPIT  from 1990 to 1991. MediaWorks is a New Zealand-based television, radio and interactive media company which owns TV3 and FOUR, as well as 18 local and national radio stations including The Edge, More FM, Mai FM and The Rock.

Wratt says he became interested in radio while growing up in Blenheim and came to study at CPIT because “it was, and still is, the best radio broadcasting course in New Zealand”. “It gave me a chance to try all areas of radio before having to settle on a preferred employment direction.”

Wratt has had an impressive career in the radio, including becoming the Programme Director of The Edge when he was 22 years old and has worked at MediaWorks for 23 years. He is now in charge of radio content across all of MediaWork's national and local music stations.

Wratt shared his best piece of advice with CPIT’s current broadcasting students looking at heading into the industry. “Follow what drives you and what you are passionate about,” he says. “In the end, that will more likely lead to success and happiness in your chosen profession.”
