Construction industry leader backs CPIT students
Leighs Construction is backing CPIT students entering into the construction industry, announcing the establishment of an annual scholarship Wednesday night, aimed at talented first year students working towards a qualification in quantity surveying or construction management at CPIT. The scholarship will provide $2000 towards study fees as well as paid industry experience.
As a CPIT graduate himself, Company Founder Anthony Leighs is passionate about supporting CPIT students. “Supporting the future of the industry is vital. Experience is powerful and this scholarship will give students insight into the real working world while supporting their theoretical studies,” he said.
He believes that there is real opportunity for students entering the construction industry in Canterbury. “From disaster comes an opportunity for us to create one of the world’s best little cities. Christchurch will rely heavily on the construction industry in the next decade and the students of today will become leaders during this period. It is an exciting time,” he said.

The first Leighs Construction Scholarship was presented to Quantity Surveying student Mark Shaw who completed work experience with Leighs Construction at the end of 2011. Mark will complete his qualification this year and has found the extra experience offered as part of the scholarship to be invaluable.
“After being given a few small projects to work on my knowledge and confidence increased hugely. The whole scholarship has been very rewarding,” he said.
Applications for the 2012 scholarship are open through the Scholarships Office at CPIT. The 2012 winner will be announced in May.
