Orientation events

Orientation events occur each semester. It's important that you attend these events as they contribute to a successful study experience. Whānau are also encouraged to attend and support you. These events give them the chance to speak with staff, ask any questions they may have, and see where you'll be studying.

Student ID cards and passwords

Once you've enrolled and paid your fees, you can obtain a student ID card from the security office at the Madras Street campus. Remember to take your receipt of payment with you.

To access Ara's computers and printers, you need a username and password. These will be attached to your confirmed enrollment form.

To learn about the benefits of your student ID card, view the Student ID page.

Study information

Timetables, course outlines, and assessment dates can all be found on Moodle. However, if you're unsure about any scheduling aspect of your programme, contact us on 0800 24 24 76.

All programmes require a certain level of class attendance. Good attendance increases your chances of achieving your qualification and being successful.

As well as attending classes, you'll need to spend time studying outside of the classroom. The amount of time depends on your programme. Generally, it's recommended that for every course, you should do at least two hours of extra study per week, either on your own or with fellow students.

Time management and organisational skills

Tertiary study is different to high school or the workplace and it can be quite demanding. Effective time management and organisational skills are important as they'll help you meet deadlines and, in the long run, pass your course.

You'll need to allocate time for study and working on assignments, and you'll also need to make time to enjoy the social aspects of student life. Tools such as yearly and weekly planners can be very helpful. Self-management is another skill you'll need to learn, as it's necessary to keep distractions (such as Facebook, Youtube and TV) to a minimum.
