Student Ambassadors are current students who share their experiences of being a student at open days, career expos, campus tours and presentations.
Skinny dipping in the Avon River – that's Alwyn's recommendation for what someone should do on their last day in Canterbury. Given that his goal is to head overseas to work (as a racing engineer after finishing his mechanical engineering degree), we look forward to seeing him take his own advice on his last day here.
Inspired by his grandfather to pursue a career in civil engineering, Best is studying at Ara and particularly enjoying the group projects and interaction with tutors. As well as studying, Best is working as a student ambassador, helping others to make good study choices.
Cassandra Amos (Cassie)
Cassie came straight to Ara from high school and is currently studying marketing. Her goal is to be a successful sales person for a big business "making big dollars". In the meantime, when she's not studying she loves having coffee at Black Betty's, lunch at Winnie's and hanging out at Taylors Mistake beach.
Nursing student Chantelle is a big fan of Caesar salads, chocolate and The Hunger Games series. She's also into horse riding and sports, and decided to become a student ambassador so she could share her positive experience of Ara with others. When she graduates she'd like to specialise in an area of nursing but hasn't decided what that will be yet.
Felix decided to become a student ambassador when he was invited by his old school to promote Ara's New Zealand Broadcasting School, where he's a second year student. He likes the family feel at the school and says the small class sizes make it easy for students and teachers to establish strong relationships. When he's not studying, Felix enjoys writing, filmmaking and eating his favourite food, sushi.
Gabriella is an applied science student who loves bacon and smoothies (just not together). She also likes to spend time singing and dancing. She says she's found her passion at Ara and became a student ambassador to help others follow their passion. Her career goal is to work with families on their relationships with food.
Hamuera's favourite place in Canterbury is Fitness Canterbury – not that surprising given he's studying for a Bachelor of Applied Science, specialising in sport and exercise science. His advice to fellow students it to not be afraid to ask for help; from other students, tutors and learning services.
Jack is studying a diploma in IT and aims to follow it up with a degree specialising in networking. If he could have any job in the world, he'd choose to be the CEO of a global infrastructure engineering firm.
Jasmine (Min) Chen
Four years ago Min travelled here from Shanghai to study human nutrition. She's had a great time here ever since, which is reflected in her role as a student ambassador. She enjoys her role and considers it a great way to gain experience.
Recovering from a long term illness prompted Jessica to retrain in a new field. She's currently studying a diploma in ICT before moving on to a degree in computer science. She loves pasta and the movie Superbad, and her favourite place in Christchurch is the Arts Centre.
Judging by his favourite movies (Inception, Interstellar and The Matrix), Jim isn't afraid of big, futuristic concepts. Which must come in handy as a visual communications student. Beyond the movies, Jim enjoys hiking and taking photos and videos. He also likes working as a student ambassador, helping high schoolers understand all that Ara has to offer.
As a student ambassador, Letitia has become confident talking to large groups of people. The applied science student loves being at Ara where she's made many friends. She also loves working out at the gym, team training and banana cake with chocolate icing.
Maxine wanted to be a student ambassador in order to meet people and tell others what a great place Ara is. In between study and her student ambassador duties, she loves catching up with friends, family time, swimming and watching movies.
Hailing from Brisbane, Micaela is in her second year of a Bachelor of Applied Science, specialising in sport and exercise science. Not surprisingly, her advice to other students for getting the most out of Ara is to hit the gym before classes.
Not only does broadcasting student Mitchell reckon his entire time at Ara has been fantastic, he's also a great communicator, both of which make him an ideal student ambassador. He loves singing, gigging and crème brulee and wants to be a leading broadcast journalist. Remember his name; you could be seeing a lot of him in the future.
Raymond Bachert (Connor)
Connor's dream job would be to work as a designated medical astronaut on a mission to Mars but he also has more down-to-earth goals. When he completes his Bachelor of Nursing he'd like to join the Royal New Zealand Army Nursing Corps to assist with Antarctic missions and overseas peacekeeping initiatives.
Civil engineering is Simon's career choice and he's loving the skills and experience he's getting in his chosen field at Ara. In his free time he loves cooking, shopping and eating hot pot, and having a part time job which helps improve his English; being a student ambassador.
Before coming to Ara to study nursing, Susan was working for an American bank in India. If she could have any job in the world, she'd love to work as a wildlife photographer, travelling the world.
Yuanjie Shi (Stan)
Stan is studying English and computing, with the goal of eventually working as a programmer. He's a fan of The Matrix, chocolate sundaes and reckons Hagley Park and Canterbury Museum are two of the best places to spend time in Christchurch.
