The management structure at Ara consists of management teams including the Chief Executive Reference Group, Te Kāhui Manukura - Leadership Group and the Senior Managers Forum.
Reporting to the Ara Council, the Chief Executive is responsible for the delivery of the institute's Strategic Plan.

Tony Gray has spent his professional life in education. He came to Ara in 2017 from Nelson Marlborough Institute of Technology (NMIT) where he was CE for 11 years, leaving the institute in excellent health with a top NZQA review.
Along with a Bachelor and Graduate Diploma qualification in education, Tony is a Fellow of The New Zealand Institute of Management (FNZIM), a graduate of the Institute of Directors Professional Directors’ Programme and a Chartered Biologist, amongst other achievements.
He began his career as an animal husbandry and science lecturer at Sparsholt College, Hampshire, in 1983, and progressed to Director of Student Services before moving on to Brooksby College, Leicestershire as Vice Principal in 1994. He served as Principal and Chief Executive at Brooksby Melton College before moving to New Zealand for Orion Hotel Schools Group Pacific International Hotel Management School in 2003. He joined NMIT in 2006.
